November 24, 2019 -- As the holidays roll around, many families use food to come together and celebrate. This Thanksgiving season, the Leonardo DRS team in Melbourne, Fla. has done its part to make sure all families – no matter the income – can participate.
Throughout the month of November, the Leonardo DRS Melbourne campus supported the 10th Annual Space Coast Basket Brigade with an onsite food drive, and had a little fun in the process. Dividing into teams, employees engaged in a friendly competition to collect the most items for contribution, with the Land Electronics Assembly team collecting 1,062 cans of corn. Overall, the food drive amounted in over 3,000 Thanksgiving items donated to the Brigade.
For the past decade, the Space Coast Basket Brigade has aided in providing low-income families in Brevard County with baskets of Thanksgiving dinner materials, giving them an opportunity to celebrate that they may not have had otherwise. The weekend before Thanksgiving, over 2,000 volunteers – including a team of DRS employees – gathered at a local high school to prepare, fill, and deliver more than 2,500 baskets for families in the area.
In addition to a food drive on-campus, the Land Electronics and Electro-Optical Infrared Systems business units came together to sponsor the Basket Brigade at a “Prestige” level by donating complete Thanksgiving meals to more than 50 families across Brevard County.
