Recruiters Teach High School Students About Leonardo DRS

May 14, 2019 -- A recruiting team from Leonardo DRS Naval Power Systems (NPS) in Milwaukee recently spent two days with almost 100 prospects from four local high schools for the business's new Youth Apprenticeship Program.

The students, all sophomores and juniors, met with Ralph Simpson, senior manager of operations, Steven Trebatoski, senior manager of manufacturing engineering, and assemblers Jacob Freida and Koran Stepherson, who discussed NPS products, technologies and career opportunities. The students' curriculum includes advanced levels of mathematics and science as well as technical and problem-solving courses

The Youth Apprenticeship Program allows high school students to combine their technically oriented curriculum with hands-on training and work experience in a related field. Students must complete at least 450 training and working hours per year while maintaining normal progress toward graduation.

The company participates in their development and mentors them continually. At completion of the program, the students are expected to be well prepared to launch careers in manufacturing.

"I was really impressed with their enthusiasm for technologies that, before our visit, they didn't even know existed," Simpson said. "These young people represent the future of Leonardo DRS, and it's exciting."
